Yosemite National Park was born on October 1, 1890 when then President Benjamin Harrison signed the legislation making the 1,500 acre area including Tuolumne Meadows, the high country, and Hetch Hetchy. Although the Giant Sequoias of Mariposa Grove remained under California’s control until 1906, the area that is known as Yosemite National Park today was nearly identical to the area then. The Yosemite Grant itself was signed on June 30, 1906. Although there was an indigenous indian tribe occupying the area until 1969 due to the regulations involving requirements to relocate if remarried or upon the death of a parent, the area is protected from development by the United States government as part of the National Parks protection plan. Under the regulations, there can be no spoiling of the natural landscape and no intrusion of commercial activities that would impact the area designated as a National Park.
